Dried apples: a short introduction

The apple is a fruit of the Malus domestica tree and one of the most widely cultivated fruits. There are around 2,000 varieties of apples – with a wide range of tastes, textures and colors – and varieties were recognized more than 2,000 years ago. The earliest Europeans would consume apples before the settlement of the Americas, which was accompanied by the distribution of seedling apple varieties.

Apples are eaten fresh. They can also be cooked in a number of ways, used in fillings sauces and beverages such as apple juice and cider. Dried apples belong to the dried fruit family and are a food that concentrates a multitude of nutrients in a small quantity.

NUTRITIONAL FACTS

Dried apples have high levels of soluble and insoluble natural fiber. Insoluble natural fiber contributes to the proper function of the digestive system and prevents and controls constipation, while soluble natural fiber have lipid-lowering action, reducing the levels of “bad” cholesterol. Moreover, apples are a rich source of vitamin C, which boosts the immune system, and potassium, which is a significant mineral that regulates the cardiovascular and neuromuscular function.

Dried apples also contain high amounts of antioxidants, such as flavonoids and quercetin, which according to scientific data, protects nervous system cells with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. They are also associated with the reduced risk of neurological diseases, such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease. They contain pectin, a polysaccharide that helps control blood-sugar levels, preventing their sharp fluctuation.
