BLUE POPPY Seeds: a short introduction

Blue poppy seeds come from the common poppy (scientific name: Papaver somniferum) and are mainly used in cooking and baking. The flavor of these seeds is slightly sweet and rather nutty. When roasted, the taste and flavor become more intense. Blue poppy seeds contain a very small amount of opium alkaloids, such as morphine, codeine, thebaine and papaverine. Therefore, the seeds may have analgesic, soothing, mildly hypnotic and antitussive properties.

NUTRITIONAL FACTS

Blue poppy seeds are a good source of natural fiber: 100 g of blue poppy seeds contain 19.5 g of natural fiber. Natural fiber helps control constipation and reduce LDL cholesterol levels. They are a source of B complex vitamins, such as thiamine, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, riboflavin, niacin and folic acid. Many of the above help the metabolism and are necessary for the proper function of the body.

Blue poppy seeds are rich in minerals, iron, copper, calcium, potassium, manganese, zinc and magnesium. They are very rich in linoleic (omega 6) and oleic acid. Oleic acid is a monounsaturated fatty acid that helps reduce LDL cholesterol and contributes to the better function of the heart.
