California Almond Outlook: Mixed Harvest Signals for Buyers

📈 The market signal

Last crop year is a useful warning against letting one production estimate dictate procurement. An official estimate landed well above industry expectations, changing buyer assumptions and encouraging hand-to-mouth purchasing. Prices dropped sharply after the release.

As harvest deliveries accumulated, the physical evidence increasingly pointed to production falling short of that forecast. The lesson is not that official estimates have no value. It is that a favorable headline can lose authority once the crop starts arriving.

Buyers who build the whole purchasing plan around that headline may then need to return after the market has changed its view.

🌦 What it means for buyers

California’s current harvest is underway, but the sample is still too narrow for a settled crop call. Early field reports indicate smaller kernel sizing in Nonpareil and Independence, with lighter weights reported in several regions. At the same time, general quality has been good so far.

That is a genuinely mixed opening, not proof that final production will disappoint. Nor does last season’s sequence establish a template for this one.

Reports from a few areas matter as questions to monitor, not conclusions to trade as settled facts. The commercial risk sits in the information gap, especially for buyers leaving every purchase decision tied to one optimistic assumption.

🎯 Buyer Decision

Split requirements into tranches rather than making one harvest call carry the entire program. Secure the volume needed for near-term commitments, then set clear review points for the balance as more deliveries reach handlers. Match each tranche to shipment windows and specification needs, so later decisions are deliberate rather than rushed.
