PEANUTS: A SHORT INTRODUCTION

Peanuts – one of the most consumed nuts in the world today – are an iconic snack food, consumed for their high nutritional value. Although quite high in calories, peanuts are packed with healthy fats and high-quality veggie protein, plus they are low on carbs.

China is the largest producer in the world, accounting for over 42 metric tons of produce, while India, the United States, and Nigeria contribute 28% of the total output.

Peanuts (Arachis hypogaea), live in sub-tropical environments, and as the botanical name suggests, they don’t grow on trees, bur under the soil, with only the shrub leaves visible. The entire process of cultivating, harvesting and processing is mechanized, and is repeated more than once a year.

Peanuts belong to the nuts family and have high levels of “good” monounsaturated fats, which are an ally for a healthy heart. They also feature a number of other nutrients, such as vitamin E, niacin, folic acid and proteins. Peanuts also contain resveratrol, an antioxidant found in red grapes too. Meta-analyses have shown that people who consume dry nuts, like peanuts, at least 4 times a week, show a 37% reduction of the risk of coronary heart disease compared to people who rarely or never consumed any.

Peanuts also provide significant protection against cancer, due to the substances they contain. Studies have shown that consuming peanuts two times per week or more results in a 58% reduced risk of colon cancer in women and 27% in men. Peanuts also protect against Alzheimer’s disease, as a result of their niacin content. A study showed that people who had received the maximum dose of niacin through food had 70% less chance of developing the disease. Peanuts also offer manganese, which is a key ingredient for the body as it is necessary for the function of the enzyme system and for energy.
