CHIA Seeds: a short introduction

Chia seeds come from the Salvia hispanica plant (which is a member of the mint family), originating in Central and South America. It is thought that Ancient Aztecs and Mayans used the seeds for energy. Chia seeds contain important nutrients and are high in plant protein and amino acids. As a result, they are a nutritious choice for vegetarian and vegan diets.

Chia seeds are one of the richest sources of omega-3, with high levels of alpha-linolenic acid, a fatty acid that is valuable when received through food. They also contain good quality proteins, which is a rare feature for foods of plant origin. Chia seeds contain calcium, phosphorus and manganese, antioxidants and minerals.

Chia seeds are rich in insoluble and soluble natural fiber. Soluble natural fiber helps to reduce cholesterol. The complex carbohydrates they contain are gradually absorbed, preserving stable energy levels, while the omega-3 fatty acids boost brain function and mood. The soluble natural fiber of chia seeds absorbs water and expands, forming a type of gel, which creates the sense of being full, leading to a reduced sense of hunger and calorie consumption. The insoluble natural fiber also helps to prevent constipation.
